Johnny, 28, who learnt to surf at Compton Bay first won the prestigious title back in 2009 before going on to win the British Championships in 2010.
The Championships is the first event on the contest calender and is usually held on the first weekend in May but due to several weeks of poor surf on the North Cornish coast, organisers were forced to postpone the event 3 times. At the 4th time of asking the Championships finally got under way. The storms that had lashed the South west during the week had left a residual dying swell. With this the contest Directors decided to complete the whole of the Men’s and Ladies Open Event in just one day. This meant that each of the competitors who made the finals would have surfed 4 competitive heats in one day. This was not only a test of skill and prowess but fitness and stamina would be a deciding factor too.

With decent 2 -3ft surf rolling through Watergate Bay all day the finals got started in the early evening. The men’s division was well represented with all the top surfers from around the country competing. Johnny was one of the stand-outs in the early rounds of the event, making his way to the final with a combination of consistent, powerful surfing mixed with some new school moves. The final was an array of progressive surfing from all four surfers, each posting impressive scores, but it was Johnny who attacked early in the heat, posting two high scoring waves in the first half of the final, giving him a clear lead that the other finalists never matched. Sam Lamiroy (Newcastle) finished second, Stuart Campbell (North Devon) third and Gordon Fontain (Bournemouth) fourth.

Johnny said after winning ‘The waves were really fun and similar to what I grew up surfing back on the Isle of Wight so I felt really relaxed out there. I surfed every heat as if I was just going for a fun surf and not over thinking things too much. It usually works out best that way. There hasn’t been much surf lately and its been so long since the last contest, I think everyone including myself felt a bit rusty coming into the event. I’m stoked to win and hopefully this will set me up for more success later on in the season.’

The Saltrock Open 2011 went off in style this weekend and ended with crowning a new champion – congratulations Johnny Fryer!
The Saltrock Open stole the show on what is now the busiest weekend of the year in Croyde. The waves were better than expected reaching 3 -4 ft on Sunday and everyone who came to watch saw great performances from the UKs top surfers.
The Men’s Open was strongly contested as predicted and was rounded off by a great final. The lead went back and forth throughout with Alan Stokes leading most of the way, then Russell Winter came back strongly only to be overtaken by new champion Johnny Fryer on the last wave of the heat.
UKPSA Director Dave Reed was stoked with how the event ran. “Another successful Saltrock contest, with record entries and great support from Saltrock and Nike 6.0 as well as Marley Mellow Mood and Relentless plus numerous other organisations this well established event will go from strength to strength”

1. Johnny Fryer
2. Russ Winter
3. Alan Stokes

A clean 3ft swell with offshore winds greeted the cream of British surfing talent at Porthmeor beach for the inaugural running of the Rider Slip Slider.
A unique format was used whereby each surfer competed in two heats with the best two scores from either heat gaining a place in the four man final. The tension built during the day as it became clear that securing a place in the final was gonna be very tight, no one knew who was through until the last heat had finished.
The comp encouraged the guys to cut loose and go for the biggest moves in their repertoire as they chased the max score.
The final took place in clean but challenging surf as the sets became less frequent. Each of the finalists had demonstrated they were capable of landing the top prize but in the end it was Johnny Fryer who walked off with the title and a cheque for £1,000.

Report: ESF Surf School:

This weekend we were blessed with pumping surf and the presence of British Champion Johnny Fryer for the final Russle Winter coaching weekend.
Solid southeast winds groomed corduroy groundswell lines providing perfect conditions. Saturday morning saw everyone score peeling 3ft lefthanders at Towan in Newquay Bay, but despite the fast sucky conditions, the best was yet to come in the afternoon. As the tide pushed in at Fistral, it delivered as good as it gets 4ft, perfectly clean, offshore and barrelling.
The team was coached by Russell Winter – Europes most successful surfer and Johnny Fryer, reigning British Champion.
James Curry, 27, a lawyer from Cardiff, said: It was a great weekend, and I have lots of great tips to take away and work on. The video analysis is such a big help to emphasise the things that Im doing wrong.
Russ said: It was a great weekend to finish off a really successful year of coaching. We had a great bunch of people, superb conditions and it was great to have Johnny Fryer along to help out as well.’

David Finlayson, Student, 13, Aberdeen
‘Awesome! Loved it, really useful tips and advice. Would come back again for sure’.

Stuart Brereton, Newquay, 30

‘Thanks guys learnt a lot enjoyed it. Good teachers great times’.

Simon Neate, Chiropodist, Camelford

‘Really enjoyed the course, learnt some great tips from Russ and Johnny.’

A host of the UK’s top Surfers came together to compete and celebrate over a weekend of surfing and music. With the true spirit of community, both locals and visitors, from as far away as South Africa and Australia, came together making for an incredible vibe and unique atmosphere.

The open final saw top pro surfers Oli Adams, Johnny Fryer, South African Brandon Roberts and local favourite Tyson Greenaway fight it out for top spot. Everyone ripped in the final, but it was clearly a close call between Fryer and Roberts for the title. It wasn’t untill the after party later that night that Johnny Fryer was crowned Greenaway pro champion.

Thumping double-overhead waves provided the canvas for an impressive display of surfing at Watergate Bay this weekend in the new format English Open Championships.

With Saturday’s pulsing 6 to 8ft swell on the limit of contestable conditions, organisers opted to run only the elite Open division. But by Sunday the waves had dropped to a more manageable 4ft, allowing all eight divisions to be completed in fun, albeit choppy, surf. Newquay-based Johnny Fryer claimed the presitigious Open division title in a closely-fought heat.

Any of the four finalists – who included Cornishmen Josh Ward, Andrew Griffen and Shaun Skilton – would have been worthy winners. “It was a crazy final,” said a delighted Johnny Fryer after receiving his trophy as the English Open champion.

“The boys were all ripping, there were a lot of waves ridden, and it must have been super, super close. I’ve been second and third before and I just didn’t want another second. It feels great.”

The August Bank Holiday weekend saw a hive of activity at the inaugural Quiksilver Skins invitation competition, one of the most innovative contest formats to grace the circuit. Thirty two of the country’s top surfers battled it out for the top spot prize of £500 and a Gibson Les Paul guitar.

The weekend saw some challenging conditions ranging from two foot to five foot, with Sunday bringing in the bigger swell. The exciting one-on-one event saw Johnny Fryer, Isle of Wight and Mark Vaughan, South Wales battle it out in a surf off after they both won three heats on the Saturday. Johnny Fryer eventually took pole position as the winner, grabbing himself a healthy £500 pot of prize money as well as the classic Gibson Les Paul guitar.
